When Ayshe Nuri smiles today, there is a special reason: for the first time in years, the 55-year-old woman can open her mouth again — more than just a few millimeters. She owes this to a procedure performed for the first time by the expert team of oral, maxillofacial, and plastic facial surgery at Helios Hospital Kassel: a temporomandibular joint endoprosthesis implantation.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (MKG) at the Helios Clinic Duisburg-Homberg regularly treats children from war and crisis zones in cooperation with Friedensdorf International. Most recently, the treatment of two small patients was successfully completed, in whose home countries medical care was not possible for various reasons.

Amir (name changed by the editors) comes from Afghanistan. Due to an incorrectly healed and as yet untreated fracture of the temporomandibular joint, the boy came to the Helios St. Josefshospital in Uerdingen for treatment via Friedensdorf International. After surgery and physiotherapy exercises, the 10-year-old can now eat normally again.
